How one consultant’s vision became a global professional tool, bringing Classical Feng Shui practice into the digital age.

The FST Professional Software Platform began its journey in 2021 as one Feng Shui consultant’s response to a challenge familiar to many practitioners: the frustrating lack of user-friendly, readily accessible software specifically designed to support professional Classical Feng Shui consultations and enhance the quality and presentation of client reports.

At the time, software options for Classical Feng Shui professionals were limited, often expensive and technologically restrictive. Programs were typically sold on physical discs, licensed for installation on a single computer, with software updates and upgrades attracting additional fees on top of the original purchase price.

These limitations highlighted the need for a more accessible, flexible and affordable solution one that would embrace modern technology while supporting the traditional knowledge, analytical skills and professional expertise of the Feng Shui practitioner.

In collaboration with software development specialists Shantallow Partners Pty Ltd, Senior Master Janene Laird set out to create the professional tools she had long sought for her own Feng Shui consultations. Five years later, that vision has evolved into the FST Professional Software Platform, a cloud-based solution now used by Feng Shui consultants around the world.

This is the story of how the platform came to life, guided by a practising consultant who understood the challenges of professional Feng Shui practice firsthand. From its earliest concept to its ongoing development, every feature, function and design decision has been shaped by practical experience, ensuring the technology serves the practitioner, not the other way around.

More than simply a software solution, the FST Professional Software Platform represents a commitment to modernising professional Feng Shui practice while preserving its traditional foundations, equipping consultants with the tools, confidence and capabilities to remain relevant, competitive and successful in an increasingly technology-driven world.

A Practitioner First

Senior Master Janene Laird’s journey into professional Feng Shui began with a background in education. Holding a Bachelor of Arts and a Diploma of Teaching, she undertook her initial studies in Classical Feng Shui and Chinese Astrology at the Australian College of Environmental Studies in 2003.

Her professional development continued under the guidance of three distinguished IFSA Grand Masters: Grand Master Raymond Lo of Hong Kong, Grand Master Vincent Koh of Singapore and Grand Master Dr Stephen Skinner. She also pursued further studies in BaZi (Chinese Astrology) with Dr Chong Jin Peh, continually expanding her knowledge and expertise in the classical Chinese metaphysical arts.

In 2010, she founded Feng Shui Today, an international online magazine dedicated to promoting professional standards, education and a deeper understanding of Classical Feng Shui, which she continues to serve as Editor-in-Chief.

Her contributions to the profession were formally recognised in November 2011 when the International Feng Shui Association (IFSA) conferred upon her the title of Accredited Feng Shui Master (AFSM) at the International Feng Shui Convention in Singapore. At the invitation of the IFSA Executive Committee, she subsequently established the IFSA Australia Chapter, becoming the founding President of the Association’s first international chapter. In 2024, her longstanding commitment to the profession was further acknowledged when she was elevated to the prestigious title of Senior Master.

More than two decades of professional consultations, teaching, publishing and industry leadership have given Senior Master Janene a unique understanding of the practical challenges facing today’s Feng Shui consultants. She recognised not only what practitioners genuinely needed from their professional software, but also the significant gap between those needs and the tools traditionally available.

It was this combination of classical knowledge, hands-on consulting experience and a commitment to advancing professional standards that ultimately inspired the development of the FST Professional Software Platform, a solution conceived by a practitioner, designed around the realities of professional practice and created to help bring Classical Feng Shui confidently into the digital age.

Recognising the Limitations of Traditional Software

A decade ago, most Feng Shui software available to professional consultants was technologically restrictive, typically installed on a single computer, infrequently updated and often designed around the methodology of one particular school or tradition. For practitioners working directly with clients, these limitations presented considerable challenges. Software installed on an office computer was inaccessible during an on-site consultation, while charts and diagrams prepared in advance often required additional work before they could be incorporated into a professional client report.

Equally frustrating was the poor quality of the graphics, charts and templates generated by many of these early programs. Although functional for basic calculations, the visual outputs frequently lacked the clarity, resolution and professional presentation standards expected in a comprehensive Feng Shui report. Once saved, exported or inserted into a client document, images could become pixelated, distorted or difficult to read. Consultants were often left with the time-consuming task of recreating charts, adjusting graphics or manually improving their presentation to produce reports that reflected the quality of their professional expertise.

Beyond these practical shortcomings, there were also concerns regarding the transparency, consistency and scope of the underlying calculations. Many existing software programs were largely limited to Flying Star and Eight Mansions Feng Shui, offering little flexibility or support for the broader range of classical methodologies employed in professional consultations.

For Senior Master Janene Laird, these limitations highlighted the need for a more comprehensive, accessible and professionally reliable software solution—one capable of integrating multiple Classical Feng Shui methodologies while delivering the accuracy, flexibility and high-quality presentation tools required by today’s professional practitioners.

Her vision was straightforward, although technically ambitious: a single, cloud-based professional platform, accessible from anywhere and on multiple devices, combining accurate classical calculations with high-quality graphics, flexible design tools and professional reporting capabilities.

Importantly, the platform would not simply automate calculations. Its underlying methodologies and conventions would be clearly defined, carefully reviewed and guided by the knowledge and practical experience of a qualified, experience Feng Shui Master.

The objective was never to replace the expertise of the consultant, but rather to provide the technology needed to support that expertise, streamline time-consuming processes and elevate the quality, consistency and professionalism of client reports.

In doing so, the FST Professional Software Platform would help bridge the gap between traditional Classical Feng Shui knowledge and the expectations of professional consulting in an increasingly digital world.

2021: From Concept to the First Professional Tool

The journey began in 2021 with the development of a modest software application originally known as the FSML Tool. Its initial purpose was straightforward: to recreate the Classical Feng Shui charts and diagrams that Senior Master Janene Laird regularly prepared for her own consultations, transforming traditionally time-consuming manual processes into accessible, browser-based professional tools.

Unlike conventional software installed on a single computer, this new approach embraced cloud-based technology, allowing consultants to access their professional tools wherever they were working, whether in the office, at home or on-site with a client.

From the outset, development followed one guiding principle: classical accuracy and professional integrity must always take precedence over technological convenience.

Each new module was developed through a carefully structured process. SM Janene first identified the required methodology and established the appropriate classical conventions. These specifications were then translated into software calculations, with the resulting charts and diagrams rigorously checked against manually prepared examples and her own professional experience before being approved for release.

This practitioner-led approach ensured that the platform was not simply generating automated results, but producing tools grounded in established Feng Shui principles and tested against real-world consulting requirements.

As interest grew among fellow practitioners and industry colleagues, so too did the platform’s capabilities. What began as a collection of essential professional tools gradually evolved into a more comprehensive, subscription-based software service, incorporating additional features designed to streamline consultations and improve the preparation and presentation of client reports.

In 2026, this evolution culminated in the transition from FSML to the FST Professional Software Platform, establishing a stronger identity alongside Feng Shui Today magazine and a dedicated online home at tools.fengshuitoday.com.

What began as one consultant’s solution to a practical problem had grown into an expanding professional resource for Classical Feng Shui practitioners worldwide, combining traditional knowledge, modern technology and the practical experience of those who use it.

The FST Professional Software Platform Today

What began in 2021 as a practical solution to the challenges experienced by one professional Feng Shui consultant has evolved into a comprehensive, cloud-based platform designed to support practitioners around the world.

Today, the FST Professional Software Platform is available through two subscription levels, providing flexibility for consultants with different professional requirements.

The Standard subscription provides access to the platform’s core Classical Feng Shui tools, supporting accurate chart preparation, compass analysis and professional consulting activities.

The Pro subscription extends these capabilities with advanced features, including the enhanced digital compass, annual Tong Shu, branded client reports, consultation workflow tracking, and additional professional charting tools.

Reflecting the platform’s longstanding connection with the International Feng Shui Association, IFSA members are also eligible for a discount on their first year’s subscription, supporting the wider adoption of professional technology within the industry.

Despite the considerable advances made since its inception, the guiding philosophy behind the platform remains unchanged.

Every new feature begins with the practical needs of working Feng Shui consultants. Development priorities continue to focus on tools that enhance real-world consultations, particularly residential and commercial property assessments. Each new function is carefully reviewed and tested under the guidance of Senior Master Janene Laird to ensure that its calculations and applications remain consistent with the Classical Feng Shui principles they are intended to represent.

Above all, the FST Professional Software Platform is not designed to replace the knowledge, experience or professional judgement of a qualified consultant. Rather, its purpose is to support and strengthen professional practice, reducing time spent on repetitive calculations and report preparation while allowing practitioners to concentrate on what matters most: delivering thoughtful, personalised and professionally informed advice to their clients.

As Classical Feng Shui continues to evolve within an increasingly technology-driven world, the platform represents an important step towards greater accessibility, professionalism and industry relevance, helping to position today’s consultants for continued growth and success in the digital age.
